Aerothermal energy: what it is and how it works

Are you looking for a way to regulate the temperature of your home in the most sustainable way possible? Aerothermal energy may be just what you need. For both cooling and heating, as well as for heating domestic hot water, this is one of the best options today. In addition, you may be interested to know that one way to make this temperature regulation even more sustainable and ecological is by combining it with photovoltaic solar energy.

If you want to learn about this type of energy to regulate temperature, keep reading this article from EcologíaVerde, because we will tell you everything about what aerothermal energy is and how it works , as well as how you can install it in your home.

What is aerothermal energy?

Aerothermal energy is a technology that obtains energy from the air and, from this, covers hot water, heating and cooling needs in the home or office.

This technology, which began to appear a decade ago, is increasingly found in more homes, as it is gradually becoming more known and easier to have access to and install at home, and all thanks to brands like Viessmann .

The fact that it works with air makes this technique for regulating ambient temperature and water considered an ecological option , respectful of the environment and, ultimately, part of the renewable energy environment , which over time is gaining more followers around the world for a variety of reasons, both related to caring for the environment and to the household economy.

How does aerothermal energy work?

Aerothermal energy is a clean technology that is responsible for obtaining thermal energy found in the air and transforming it into heating, cooling or hot water for the home. This is done thanks to the aerothermal heat pump system. An external unit is installed outside the house that is responsible for collecting the energy from the air and transferring it to the internal circuit of the home, becoming an ecological and economical hot water, heating and cooling system (using both underfloor heating and fan coils and BT radiators).

The process of how aerothermal energy works is:

  1. Air from outside the house enters a part known as the evaporator. Thermal energy is exchanged in this part of the system, and when this happens, the refrigerant evaporates.
  2. The resulting evaporated refrigerant goes to a compressor that compresses it and this increases the temperature.
  3. This compressed gas goes to a condenser that carries out the gas condensation process to convert it back into liquid, which releases thermal energy when undergoing this process, and the liquid becomes the refrigerant again. Thus, this released energy is used to transfer it to the home through the chosen air conditioning system (underfloor heating, fan coils, etc.).
  4. The remaining refrigerant liquid is directed towards the expansion valve, which will lower the pressure and temperature of the liquid and it can return to the evaporator to start the entire aerothermal process again.

In addition, there is the possibility that this system is in two parts ( split aerothermal system ), leaving one unit inside the house and another unit outside, or in a single outdoor unit ( monobloc aerothermal system ).

Advantages of aerothermal energy

These are the main advantages of aerothermal energy in the home :

  • It does not use storable fuels, so you do not have to worry about its supply.
  • It does not generate waste when used, since it does not use fuel and is a clean system.
  • What it uses instead of fuel is air, which is why it is considered an environmentally friendly system and is part of renewable energies , which are the future.
  • It provides greater energy savings than other systems for regulating room and water temperature. In this way, by installing aerothermal energy at home you can achieve maximum energy efficiency in your home.
  • It is one of the most complete systems that exists today, as it allows you to cover your family’s needs: cooling, heating and hot water.
  • This system has a very low noise level, so if the noise level of a heating or cooling appliance worries you, you won’t have to worry about it with this one.
  • Although an initial investment is required, the maintenance of aerothermal energy is minimal, so in the medium-long term it is considered a better option than other systems.

How to install aerothermal energy at home

If, knowing it better, you now want to install aerothermal energy in your home , and even combine it with photovoltaics, do not hesitate to look for the best options in the area where you live and its surroundings.

A great solution for energy management at home is to combine the installation of solar photovoltaic technology with heat pump systems , where Viessmann goes one step further: not only does it combine both systems to optimize energy performance, but Viessmann heat pumps take advantage of the surplus photovoltaic energy to store it as thermal energy, which makes it possible to achieve high self-consumption rates.
